Paver Patios
Paver Patio with Fire Pit in Cedar Falls, IA
Cedar Falls, Iowa
Worn lawn became a paver patio with a fire pit and seating area for evenings outside.
The problem
The backyard was worn grass that would not support furniture or a fire. The owner wanted a patio they could actually sit on at night, with a fire pit as the gathering spot.
A fire pit on a patio needs a non-combustible surround, a level field, and a pitch that drains. Dropping a kit on lawn does not last in Iowa clay.
The property
Cedar Falls backyard with tired turf, room for a patio and seating, and a house connection that needed the new hardscape to drain away from the foundation.
Work performed
We excavated the patio, compacted an aggregate base, installed pavers with edge restraint, and built in a fire pit with space for chairs. Joint sand and a finished edge closed the surface.
Materials
- Concrete pavers
- Fire pit kit / stone
- Polymeric sand
- Compacted base
Patio excavation, base, paver install, and a built-in fire pit with room for chairs.
Challenges
Fire-pit patios have two drainage jobs: the field has to shed rain, and the pit cannot sit in a low spot that fills with water. We set the pit in the layout so seating works and the surface still pitches correctly.
Finished result
Worn lawn is now a paver patio with a fire pit and room to sit. The backyard has an outdoor room that holds up through freeze-thaw. Same patio-and-pit build we use when Cedar Falls homeowners want evenings outside, not another slab of grass.
