Retaining Walls

Garage-Side Retaining Wall Rebuild in Cedar Falls, IA

Cedar Falls, Iowa

A damaged wall along the garage was rebuilt and capped with decorative gravel for drainage and a finished look.

The problem

The wall along the garage had failed. Soil and water were working the face, the cap was shot, and the grade next to the building needed to be held without trapping moisture against the foundation.

A garage-side wall has to drain. If water sits against the building, you have a wet slab problem as well as a leaning wall.

The property

Cedar Falls home with a damaged retaining wall tight to the garage, limited working room, and a need for a finished cap that sheds water instead of holding it.

Work performed

We tore out the failed section, rebuilt the wall on a compacted base with drain pipe, and finished the top with decorative gravel so water moves off the cap and the edge looks intentional next to the building.

Materials

  • Retaining wall block
  • Decorative gravel
  • Drain pipe
  • Compacted base

Tear-out of the failed section, new wall against the garage side, drainage, and a decorative gravel cap.

Challenges

Working against a garage means protecting the slab, siding, and downspouts while still getting a proper base and drain. There is no extra room to over-excavate. The drainage package still has to outlet somewhere that is not the garage floor.

Finished result

The garage side is held, drained, and capped with decorative gravel. The wall does the structural job and the finish keeps water off the building. Same details we use on any Cedar Falls wall that sits against a structure.
