Pond and Waterfall Installation in Cedar Falls
How we design and install ponds, waterfalls, and pondless water features that survive Iowa winters and still look like they belong in the yard.

A pond or waterfall changes a Cedar Falls yard in a way plants alone do not. You get sound, movement, and a reason to sit outside after work. You also get a water feature that has to live through freeze-thaw, clay soil, leaves, and the occasional curious dog. Installation is where those two realities meet. We design custom ponds, waterfalls, and pondless water gardens for homes in Cedar Falls, Waterloo, and Black Hawk County, then we build them so the liner, the pump, and the rockwork still make sense in March. This is what that job includes and how to decide which type of water feature fits your property.
Start with how you want to use it. A koi pond is a habitat. It needs depth, filtration, and a winter plan for the fish. A small preformed pond is simpler and cheaper, but it looks like a preformed pond unless you bury the edges with stone and plants. A pondless waterfall gives you the sound without a standing pool, which a lot of families with young kids prefer. Water circulates from a hidden reservoir through the falls and back. Less maintenance than a full pond, still a centerpiece. We will not talk you into koi if what you wanted was a bubbling urn by the patio. The feature should match the rest of the landscape, not fight it.
Siting is half the design. You want to see it from the house or the patio, not hide it behind the garage. You also need a route for electricity, a way to top off water, and enough setback from the foundation that you are not soaking a basement. Under trees you get shade and constant leaf load. In full sun you get more algae. Both can work if the filtration and the plant plan match. In our clay, we excavate to a stable shape, check for underground utilities, and build a shelf for plants if the design calls for it. A pond that is a steep bathtub with no shelves is harder to plant and looks unfinished.
Construction follows a sequence. Excavate. Compact and smooth. Underlayment, then a quality EPDM liner sized with enough extra to tuck and hide. Rock goes in as structure, not as a random dump of boulders. We build the waterfall so water sheets where you want it and does not sneak behind the liner. Plumbing is hidden. The pump is accessible for service. Skimmers and biological filters are sized for the volume, not for the cheapest box at the hardware store. Undersized filtration is how a pretty pond turns green by July. We would rather explain a filter at the estimate than apologize for pea soup in August.
Iowa winter is the test. Water features that are not closed correctly freeze, split lines, and kill pumps. In late fall we pull pumps, drain lines, net leaves, and set fish up with a hole in the ice for gas exchange if you keep koi. A pond de-icer is safer than smashing ice with a hammer. Installation that ignores winter closing is incomplete. When we build a feature, we also tell you how we will open it in spring and what a maintenance visit includes. If you would rather not touch it, we offer seasonal water feature maintenance. The install and the upkeep are one system.
Cost varies with size and rock. A small pondless waterfall or a compact preformed pond with decent stonework can start in the low thousands. A custom excavated pond with a real waterfall, planted shelves, and proper filtration is a larger hardscape project, often in the same conversation as a patio. Boulders, lighting, and a longer stream add labor and material. We quote after we know the footprint and the look you want. Beware of a number that only covers a liner kit and hopes you will figure out the rock. The rock is the job people see. The liner and the plumbing are the job that keeps it from leaking into the clay.
Permits are rarely the issue for a typical backyard pond. Electrical work for pumps and lighting should be done to code. If you are excavating near utilities, we call locates. Setbacks from property lines are worth checking on small lots. We handle those details so you are not surprised. Fish and plants are a separate conversation after the water is holding and the chlorine, if any from fill water, is managed. We can point you to hardy aquatic plants that survive here. Tropical lilies are a summer treat, not a set-it-and-forget-it Iowa plant.
Algae is not a failure of the install on day one. It is biology plus sun plus nutrients. Filtration, plants, and not overfeeding fish keep it in check. A waterfall that moves water helps. A stagnant bowl in full sun does not. If you have kids or pets, talk through depth, cover, and whether pondless is the better fit. We would rather design around your household than install a feature you are afraid to let people near. Lighting is worth adding at install. Retrofit is possible. Doing it while the trench is open is cheaper.
If you have been looking at water features in Cedar Falls, or you already have a tired pond that leaks and you want it rebuilt, A1 Property Services does that work. We install new ponds and waterfalls and we restore features that were never winterized right. Call (319) 464-1889 for a site visit. We will talk through pond versus pondless, show you how the rock would sit in your yard, and give you a written plan. Moving water only feels like a luxury when it still works in year five.
